A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help reverse the negative effects of aging.

According to recent research, scientists have shown that the aging process can be slowed down by the healing properties of antioxidants, found in a variety of fresh produce.

Foods rich in vitamin C such as dark green leafy vegetables, brussels sprouts, kiwis, broccoli, tomatoes and fresh fruits help protect the thymus, an important immune system organ.

Experiments on mice showed that mice given vitamin C and antioxidants had healthier thymus glands than normal mice. The thymus is a small gland located behind the sternum between the lungs. Its function is to produce immune system cells that fight diseases, especially cancer.

“Our results suggest that antioxidants and immune function are closely linked,” said Dr. Howard Petrie, of the Scripps Research Institute in California. “This study opens new avenues for therapeutic strategies to improve the immune system in the aging population.”

Vitamin C is essential for protecting and maintaining cells. It helps wounds heal and is especially important for the functioning of tissues and organs. Adults need about 40 mg of vitamin C a day. Many non-acidic fruits such as papaya, strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, raspberries, cranberries, blueberries and watermelon are also excellent sources of vitamin C.

Dr Ian Campbell, a doctor from Nottingham, said: “This research once again confirms that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, along with an active lifestyle, is one of the keys to a long and healthy life.”./.
