Death penalty for former student who killed old man to rob property

A former student broke into an old man's house to steal property. When discovered, he murdered the homeowner.

On September 26, Hanoi Court brought Le On Tung (born 1988), from Ung Hoa district, Hanoi, to trial for murder and robbery.

Originally a good student, Tung dropped out of school in his third year. His family did not know about his dropout.

After leaving school, Le On Tung lived a homeless life, without a job.

To have money to spend, he took advantage of the loopholes of families in Hoa Chanh village, Hoa Lam commune, Ung Hoa district to steal property.

On the night of August 2015, Tung broke into Mrs. Nham's house. Unable to take anything of value, he discovered that Mr. Ta Van Cat's house (born in 1925, also in Hoa Lam commune, Ung Hoa district) was unlocked, so Tung climbed over the wall and entered the house.

Discovered by Mr. Cat, the former student rushed over and choked the victim. Only when the old man became motionless did he let go.

After finishing the cigarette, he felt the old man's leg and felt his pulse still beating. Tung took a towel from the drying line and stuffed it into the victim's mouth, then tied the old man's hands in front of his chest.

The old man later died of acute respiratory failure due to airway obstruction.

After brutally treating the 91-year-old man, Tung began to rummage through the house and took away 20 million VND and 26 taels of gold worth 80.6 million VND. Then, Tung fled to Ho Chi Minh City. He spent all the money and gold on personal expenses.

On December 29, 2015, knowing that his actions had been discovered, Tung went to the police station to surrender.

At the trial, answering the questions of the panel of judges, Tung said that he turned himself in because he felt remorseful and regretful.

Present at the trial, Tung's relatives cried and apologized to the victim's family, saying that the crime he committed was partly the family's fault for not caring for and helping Tung during his difficult time.

The trial ended, Le On Tung was sentenced to death for two crimes of murder and robbery./.
