With a population of about 7 million people and up to 1,400 large and small temples, Laos is the country with the highest ratio of temples to population in the world. Introduced to Laos during the reign of King Dvaravati in the 7th century, Buddhism has become the state religion since the 14th century. 90% of the Lao population follows Buddhism and Lao people have a very close, natural connection to temples and everything related to Buddhism. Over time, there has been development but all have retained characteristics such as curved roofs, reminiscent of Buddhist temple architecture.
