In the match against Slovenia, coach Roy Hodgson continued to use the 4-1-2-1-2 formation with a diamond midfield. As for Slovenia, they did not hide their intention to play a tight defense in their home field in the hope of winning 1 point at Wembley.
In fact, Slovenia's style of play, which focused on a large number of players only doing defensive duties, caused England a lot of trouble. In the first 45 minutes, the Three Lions had 64% possession. However, most of their attacks were extremely deadlocked. England lacked a creative midfielder to launch breakthrough passes to break through Slovenia's multi-layered defense. In addition, the Three Lions' style of play also lacked speed. The slowness of England's strikers made it even more difficult for Slovenia to block all the gaps in front of Handanovic's goal.

In that context, it was no surprise that most of the Three Lions' most notable moments in the first 45 minutes came from long-range shots. In the 17th minute, Clyne and Rooney combined on the right flank and then passed back to Sterling. Just before the 16m50 box, the young England talent shot the ball wide of the post.
Attacking a lot but not scoring, the Three Lions fans were worried about. In the 57th minute, Henderson headed into his own net, unexpectedly giving Slovenia the lead. However, the away team's advantage did not last long. Exactly 1 minute later, Rooney equalized for England from the 11m mark.
Shrek's goal was like a bucket of cold water that woke up the Three Lions. After that, England played very well and scored 2 goals in a row thanks to Welbeck. Coming back to win 3-1, England had their 4th consecutive victory and continued to firmly hold the top spot in Group E.
