According to AFP/THX, on September 4, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced that the country will provide an additional 100 million pounds (153 million USD) in humanitarian aid to help resolve the Syrian crisis, thereby raising London's total contribution to more than 1 billion pounds.

Speaking at a press conference in Madrid, Mr Cameron said: “This is Britain’s biggest response to a humanitarian crisis. No other European country comes close to matching this level of aid.”

He said £60m would be used to provide aid to Syrians at home while the remaining money would be allocated to neighbouring countries such as Jordan and Türkiye - which have hosted large numbers of Syrian refugees.

Earlier in the day, the British leader told Lisbon that London would take in thousands more Syrian refugees, as the country faces growing pressure at home and abroad to resolve the crisis.

Meanwhile, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto also said on September 4 that the key to solving the refugee crisis in Europe is ending the Syrian civil war.

Speaking to Finnish media, he affirmed that it was important to discuss ways to end the conflict in Syria when more than 4 million Syrians had been forced to flee abroad.

Mr. Niinisto also said that there are some signs that the US and Russia have begun discussing resolving the Syrian crisis and that is a good sign./.
