Apple iPhone is about to have wireless charging
Apple is developing new wireless charging technology for the iPhone that could be released in 2017. The information was published by Bloomberg on January 29, citing anonymous sources close to Apple's plans.
Wireless charging is nothing new. Some iPhone rivals already include the technology, allowing users to drop their phones on a charging mat instead of fiddling with cables. However, Apple is reportedly looking into ways to charge iPhones and iPads from a distance. That poses a challenge because the efficiency degrades over distance, making it take longer to charge.

This may be a challenge for Apple, but the company could benefit iPhone owners. The USB cables you use to charge your device are often flimsy and inconvenient. Long-range wireless cards could allow users to charge their phones without taking them out of their pockets and continue charging them while using them at their desks.
Apple has been late to adopt some innovations, including larger-screen phones and NFC technology, and there are some good reasons why the phone maker has waited to adopt wireless charging. One reason is that many standards are incompatible, meaning a specific charging mat won’t necessarily work with your phone. Another reason is that the technology adds some cost, and the charging mat might not be as convenient to leave on your desk or table.
Long-range wireless charging could help Apple differentiate its devices in a market that CEO Tim Cook described this week as “dull” and beset by tough conditions. Apple is still making a lot of money, but iPhone sales are flat and iPad sales are down from a year ago. The iPhone still accounts for three-quarters of the company’s sales, so retaining customers is key to Apple’s fortunes.
Apple has not yet commented on the above information.
