Goals: Mauricio Martinez 90' - Anthony Lozano 75' penalty
The draw with Honduras left Argentina with just four points from three games in Group D. Honduras also have four points and a better goal difference (0 vs. -1), so they are in second place. They and group leaders Portugal (seven points) have qualified for the next round.
In a must-win game, the Argentines had only themselves to blame for missing so many chances. In the first half alone, the blue and white striped team wasted two clear chances with Jonathan Calleri and Leandro Vega shooting just over the bar. At the start of the second half, Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa also missed a close-range tap-in before missing a penalty in the 55th minute.
Playing on the counter-attack, Honduras also had some good chances. The team was awarded two penalties: Bryan Acosta missed in the 45th minute before Anthony Lozano succeeded in the 75th minute.
When they were behind, with almost no hope, Argentina played better. This effort was only enough for the blue and white striped team to equalize in the 90th minute thanks to a direct free kick from Mauricio Martinez.
With their early exit from Rio, Argentina will miss out on their third Olympic men's football title. They won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2008.
