ASEAN establishes information sharing network to prevent MERS epidemic
(Baonghean) - The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in recent weeks has been a hot topic attracting the attention of many countries around the world, including ASEAN countries. The disease caused by the Corona virus has caused deep concern among this group of 10 countries, as evidenced by the recent statement of the ASEAN Secretary General: "ASEAN is concerned about the spread of MERS and is taking initiatives to be ready to respond to this disease."
In a move to demonstrate cooperation and solidarity among ASEAN countries as well as concern for the health of their people, an online conference between ASEAN health experts and their counterparts from the World Health Organization (WHO), China and Japan was held on June 22 to discuss a response plan to the current top health concern.

The meeting aimed to establish a regional information network and share information and experiences, not only within ASEAN but also with other countries outside the bloc. Participants reaffirmed that sharing lessons learned or important and updated information in the process of preparing and responding to MERS is extremely useful for each country's response plan in the region.
In the current complex epidemic situation, it is necessary to provide interested parties with updated information, promote public health surveillance and inspection activities, and exchange information on risks. Not only that, countries also need to coordinate to find appropriate methods to manage medical examination and treatment facilities and be ready to respond to emergencies that affect public health.
All 10 ASEAN member states have been strengthening disease prevention, detection, information sharing and response mechanisms that were tested and proven during the SARS and Ebola outbreaks. In parallel, these countries are also tightening control of movement and travel within the region to limit the spread of the disease.
Active cooperation is not only the best way to contain the spread of MERS in the region, but also demonstrates the bloc's willingness to stand shoulder to shoulder to overcome difficulties, in line with the spirit of ASEAN.
