ASEAN establishes a network for sharing information on MERS prevention.
(Baonghean) - The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak over the past few weeks has been a hot topic attracting the attention of many countries around the world, including ASEAN countries. The disease caused by the Coronavirus has caused deep concern among these 10 countries, as evidenced by the recent statement of the ASEAN Secretary-General: “ASEAN is concerned about the spread of MERS and is undertaking initiatives to prepare for a response to this disease.”
In a move aimed at demonstrating cooperation and solidarity among ASEAN nations, as well as concern for the health of their citizens, an online conference between ASEAN health experts and colleagues from the World Health Organization (WHO), China, and Japan was held on June 22nd to discuss response plans to the current top health concerns.

The conference aimed to establish a regional information network and share information and experiences, not only within ASEAN but also with other countries outside the bloc. Participants reaffirmed that sharing lessons learned and important, up-to-date information on preparing for and responding to the MERS outbreak was extremely useful for the response plans of individual countries in the region.
Given the current complex pandemic situation, it is essential to provide relevant parties with updated information, enhance public health surveillance and monitoring, and exchange information on risks. Furthermore, countries need to cooperate in finding appropriate methods for managing healthcare facilities and preparing to respond to public health emergencies.
All 10 ASEAN member states have been strengthening disease prevention, detection, information sharing, and response mechanisms that were tested and proven during the SARS and Ebola outbreaks. Alongside these efforts, these countries are also tightening controls on movement within the region to limit the spread of disease.
Active cooperation is not only the best way to contain the spread of MERS in the region, but also demonstrates the willingness of the bloc of countries to stand shoulder to shoulder in overcoming difficulties, in the true spirit of ASEAN.
