The conference was held on the basis of the common consensus of ASEAN leaders on regional economic integration within the framework of the project "Competition Policy and Law in ASEAN" funded by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

The AEGC focused on discussing issues related to the development of the ASEAN Strategic Action Plan and Competitiveness Vision 2016-2025. This is a necessary preparation for the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 - a very important milestone on ASEAN's path towards regional economic integration and building a common home.

At the conference, AEGC once again affirmed its commitment to continue promoting full awareness of competition, strengthening the legal framework, as well as core competencies in institution building and competition implementation, with a view to building a regional mechanism to address cross-border competition issues.

According to the AEC Blueprint 2009-2015, it is expected that all member countries will have a competition policy in place by 2015 and by the end of this year, a comprehensive competition law will be implemented in at least seven member countries.
