Mangayamma Yaramati, 73 years old, gave birth to two baby girls on September 4 through in vitro fertilization.

Yaramati, from Andhra Pradesh state, said she and her husband Sitarama Rajarao, 82, had always wanted a child but were unable to conceive until they learned about in vitro fertilization (IVF). Just two months after the IVF procedure, she became pregnant.

Mr. Rajarao said he was extremely happy to see his wife give birth because they had previously tried many methods and received treatment from many doctors.

"This is the happiest moment of my life," said Yaramati.

Yaramati felt stigmatized in her village and was often excluded from community events because of her inability to become a mother. "They called me the woman who couldn't have children," Yaramati said.

The doctor who delivered the babies, Uma Sankar, said yesterday that the health of both mother and baby were stable. However, a day after the twins were born, Mr Rajarao suffered a stroke and is currently in hospital.

In 2016, another Indian woman in her 70s, Daljinder Kaur, also successfully gave birth to a baby boy through in vitro fertilization.
