On October 28, Mr. Comey sent a letter to eight congressional committee chairmen and ranking Democrats, announcing the discovery of new emails of Mrs. Clinton that needed to be investigated.

The emails were reportedly discovered on a computer seized earlier in the investigation of former US congressman Anthony Weiner and his ex-wife Huma Abedin.

Republican rival Donald Trump quickly took advantage of this to shift the focus away from his own controversies and try to score points in the final minutes of a race that many thought he was certain to lose.

On the morning of October 29, Mrs. Clinton had a 20-minute phone meeting with two assistants: campaign director John Podesta and campaign manager Robby Mook.

In an interview, Mr. Podesta described Mr. Comey's announcement on October 28 as "a lot of innuendo and little truth," giving Republicans the opportunity to "distort and exaggerate."

Many Democrats believe Mr. Comey's actions have political implications in an election already rife with scandal.

On the afternoon of October 29, Mrs. Clinton's campaign committee sent an urgent letter to Mr. Comey, requesting "immediately provide more information to the American people."

At least three Democratic senators have written letters of complaint and the Democratic National Committee has issued strong statements.

The main concern for Democrats is whether the developments and uncertainty surrounding the case could affect Clinton's election results.

Meanwhile, this must have been a gift for Mr. Trump as he gave a big round of applause and called Mrs. Clinton corrupt and untrustworthy.

On October 29, campaign manager Mook said the news should not discourage Democrats and should not hinder Mrs. Clinton in the final days of the election.

On the same day, Mrs. Clinton appeared at a number of events such as a rally in Daytona Beach and a concert in Miami with pop superstar Jennifer Lopez to encourage more voters to go to the polls.

Mrs. Clinton is also investing heavily in Florida, a state her aides say a victory would completely cut off Mr. Trump’s path to 270 electoral votes.

Several of Mrs. Clinton's representatives, such as former President Bill Clinton, Vice President Biden and daughter Chelsea Clinton, have also planned to visit the states to hold campaign talks.

Both Mr. Podesta and Mr. Mook have now criticized Mr. Comey's actions, while confidently asserting Mrs. Clinton's innocence.
