The US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal is a serious blow to the international community, the German Chancellor said. Unilaterally rejecting the deal "undermines confidence in the international order and unilaterally ending an agreement approved by the UN Security Council is not right," Merkel said in a speech in Munster.
"And it is in difficult times that we make the choice to support strengthening multilateralism. This is an urgent task before us," the Prime Minister declared.
Multilateralism is under threat not only from the abandonment of the Iran nuclear deal, but also from the US withdrawal from the Paris climate accord, she added, stressing that it is still unclear whether the Iran deal can survive without the US.
Merkel noted that the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal does not call into question the cooperation between Europe and the US. "I continue to support the transatlantic partnership," the German Chancellor affirmed.
