According to some witnesses, at that time, a container truck with license plate 15C-006.78 pulling a trailer 15R-025.19, driven by Nguyen Van Loi (born in 1973, residing in Hai Phong), was traveling on National Highway 1A from North to South. When reaching Nghi Yen commune (Nghi Loc district) - about 1km from Cam bridge, a truck with license plate 37S-8391 (driver's identity unknown) traveling in the same direction overtook the truck. Due to lack of observation when crossing the road, the truck crashed straight into a sleeper bus on the Thanh Hoa - Ho Chi Minh City route with license plate 36B-013.34 driven by Nguyen Trong Tham (residing in Tinh Gia district, Thanh Hoa province) traveling in the opposite direction carrying more than 30 passengers.

The collision was so strong that the front of the truck was crushed. Three vehicles were pinned together on Highway 1A. The accident left the driver and the truck assistant injured and trapped in the cabin. The sleeper bus driver Nguyen Trong Tham suffered a broken leg, and two other passengers suffered minor injuries. Immediately afterwards, five injured people were taken to the hospital by three ambulances.

More than 30 passengers (mostly from Thanh Hoa) were moved to a house by the roadside to wait for authorities to handle the accident.

Because National Highway 1A is being expanded and upgraded, plus heavy rain, traffic was congested for more than 2 hours, stretching over 5km from Dien An commune (Dien Chau district) - Nghi Yen commune (Nghi Loc district).

Upon receiving the news, the Traffic Police of Nghi Loc District and Traffic Police Station 5/1 quickly arrived at the scene to regulate traffic and investigate the cause of the accident.

At 11:30 a.m. on August 28, all passengers on the sleeper bus were transferred to another bus to continue their journey. Two traffic rescue vehicles also arrived at the scene to remove the three vehicles from the accident scene.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
