Technology "doctor"
(Baonghean) - With the rapid development of technology, smartphones and tablets are no longer rare items. Accordingly, the mobile phone repair profession has also developed...

Mr. Hoang carefully "diagnoses" a smartphone. |
I had the opportunity to “witness” the working process of phone repairmen, most recently the third time I came to replace the broken glass of a phone. The “favorite” mechanic who warmly welcomed me was Mr. Dam Dac Hoang, owner of a small shop in Hung Binh ward, Vinh city, specializing in repairing and replacing errors related to the screens of smart technology devices.
Because he was already familiar with the customer, he gave me a discount, charging me only 3/4 of the price of the first screen replacement. At this price, he would still make a profit of about 200,000 VND.
He smiled happily: “It’s not that I charge a high price to customers. But that amount of money is like a “risk cost” that the worker has to pay. It looks simple, but this is a job that has to bear a fairly high level of risk compared to similar businesses.”
Mr. Hoang said that replacing the screen of a smartphone is quite complicated and requires the technician to be skillful and patient, especially for high-end devices with large screens. Therefore, “occupational accidents” occur frequently.
He showed me a “patient” lying on the table waiting for repair: “Look, like this iPhone 6. The day the customer brought it in to replace the glass, I didn’t check it carefully, so when I finished replacing it and checked it again, there were “dead spots”, meaning the phone’s touch screen was paralyzed in some places. To replace the glass of these high-end phones, I had to invest in a press machine including a steam machine, a vacuum machine, a steamer and a press machine, costing up to 400 million VND. The profit wasn’t much, but I still had to pocket it to replace the new touch screen for the customer. The product must be perfect to keep customers.”
Mr. Hoang came to the mobile phone repair profession by chance. More than 10 years ago, during a trip to Vinh City, he noticed that there were many mobile phone stores but very few repairmen. Many people, when having problems with their phones, did not know who to turn to for help, especially when the official warranty period had expired.
Realizing the potential business opportunity, he decided to return to Hanoi to find some vocational training centers. Because according to him, each center will have its own "secrets" that cannot be taught but must be left behind to preserve the brand, so he had to study at many centers so that when he graduated, he could "diagnose" phones most accurately.
According to him, the difficulty of this profession is that phone lines develop at a rapid pace, and when studying, you only learn the most basic knowledge of the product lines available on the market at that time. This forces workers to constantly update information.
“For every new product line that comes out, I have to research on the company's official website, learn, and exchange experiences on technology forums... That way I won't be left behind and can keep up with the breath of technology,” Mr. Hoang shared.
He joked: Many people say that phone repair is a “sitting back and enjoying a golden bowl” profession, because the person doing this job is mostly at home all day, and when there is a lack of any part, they just call and someone will bring it to them. However, when you start working in this profession, you will realize that it is not that simple. Almost no other profession “consumes” as much time as phone repair, each day the worker has to work at least 14 hours; regularly exposed to high intensity light, heating, blow-drying, looking under a microscope... everything.
But sometimes I sit all day until my back breaks and still can't "find the problem", so even after I get home, I still feel restless and have to go back to the store to finish the problem in time to deliver the goods to the customer early.
Listening to Mr. Hoang share, we know that being a technology “doctor” is not easy. But he loves his job very much. Over the past 10 years, countless old and new machines have passed through his hands, meticulously repaired by him, saving replacement costs and bringing connection to many people.
In addition, the job not only gives him a stable income of tens of millions of dong per month, helping to support his family, but also provides stable jobs for 5 other technicians, all with a decent income.
