As a chemistry student who always wanted to become an intelligence officer, President Vladimir Putin decided to switch to studying Law and tried to get into the KGB.

According to Russia's KP newspaper, during a meeting with Russian high school teachers on June 21, President Vladimir Putin told the story of his pursuit of his dream of working in the Russian National Security Agency (KGB) as a lesson to encourage young people to pursue their passions.

According to the Russian president, when he was a student, he often watched the TV series Sword and Shield, which revolved around the fate of an intelligence officer. Since then, the young man was influenced and always dreamed of working in the security service. He began to learn in detail how to achieve that.

“At that time, I was studying at the Chemistry Department of the Institute of Technology, but I always wanted to work for the security service. I was born into an ordinary family, without connections. So where should I go? Straight to the KGB reception room?”, Putin said.

There, Mr. Putin met a nice man and had a rather serious conversation.

“He said to me, ‘First, you need to finish college. Which college? Doesn’t matter. But law school is best,’” the president continued.

From that moment on, Mr. Putin stopped studying Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, focusing on Literature and History (to take the Law exam). His teachers all understood why their student changed direction like that.

Finally, Mr. Putin passed the entrance exam to the Faculty of Law. It was a competition of 20 candidates but he still passed.

He had dreamed of becoming a pilot. He went to flight school, walked the corridors and observed. Then he imagined what his life would be like. Take off, fly to your destination and sleep, then fly again and repeat. “I thought it was a boring job,” he told himself.

From the career choice of the Russian president, the story leaves a valuable lesson for young people. Young people should determine what they like, what kind of person they want to become in the future and be determined to pursue that goal.

In 1975, Vladimir Putin graduated from the Faculty of Law of Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University). He then graduated from the KGB Higher Training School No. 1. From 1985 to 1990, he served in Dresden, East Germany.
