Before drawing the above conclusion, the authors recruited more than 12,000 people with coronary artery disease. Volunteers were asked to walk or run on a machine to measure the heart's response to physical activity.
The volunteers' fitness levels were measured in METs. One MET is equivalent to the energy required to sit in front of a computer screen. Those who expended 10 METs while exercising on the machine were considered to be in good fitness.
Compared with people in poor fitness, people in good fitness were less likely to die from cancer, heart disease, or other causes over the next five years. For every MET gained in the trial, the risk of death from these causes decreased by 9%, 9%, and 4%, respectively.
According to study author Dr. Jesus Peteiro, a cardiologist at the University Hospital of A Coruña in Spain, we can assess our fitness in METs by climbing stairs, not necessarily on a treadmill. Walking briskly up three or four flights of stairs without stopping is a sign of good fitness. If not, you need more exercise. "Try climbing four flights of stairs in one minute," Dr. Peteiro told the newspaper.Today.
In addition to prolonging life, physical activity also helps reduce weight, blood pressure, blood lipids, inflammation and improves the body's immune response to tumors.
According to health guidelines in the US, everyone should do at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week. The good news is that you can definitely use climbing stairs as a form of exercise.
