Remedy for insomnia with Mimosa pudica

According to Dr. Vo Van Chi, author of the Dictionary of Vietnamese Medicinal Plants, Mimosa pudica L. is also known as shy plant. Its scientific name is Mimosa pudica L., and it belongs to the legume family Fabaceae.

The tree grows in the wild, has a small trunk, many branches, and has hook-shaped thorns. The leaves are even-pinnate twice, the petioles are arranged like duck feet, and fold when touched lightly. Each leaf bears 15 to 20 pairs of leaflets. The flowers are purple-red, small, and clustered into a head, with a long common stalk in the leaf axils. The fruit cluster is star-shaped, the fruit is constricted between the seeds, and has many stiff hairs.

Mimosa often grows along roadsides, lawns, dikes, wastelands, on dry land, and is intolerant of waterlogging. It flowers from June to October and bears fruit from October to January of the following year. This plant isnative to tropical America. In our country, mimosa grows everywhere. This plant is also found in tropical countries around the world.

Pharmacological analysis shows that the plant contains the following components: Mimoside, mimosine, Se compounds, D-penitol, 2”-o-rhamnosylisoorientin, 2”-o-rhamnosylorientin, protein, tannin. The plant contains many amino acids: Asp. (12.6%), Thr. (4.9%), Ser. (4.7%), Glu. (13.4%), Pro. (5.7%), Gly. (7.1%), Ala. (5.8%), Val. (4.7%), Met. (2.1%), Ile. (3.3%), Leu. (13.8%), Tyr. (4.8%), Phe. (5.4%), His. (2.5%), Lys. (4.4%), Arg. (4.8%). The leaves contain mimosine, mimoside, D-terpineol and many Se compounds including selenite, contractile protein, ATP, adenosine triphosphate, ATPase, adenosine triphosphase.

Pharmacological studies have shown that the whole Mimosa pudica plant has anti-HIV activity, and has inhibitory effects on Staphyloccocus aureus Rosenbach, Neisseria catarrhal, and Escherichia coli. Alkaloids in Mimosa pudica and root decoction have inhibitory effects on the virus that causes Asian influenza type A and nasal diseases. Root decoction also has the effect of stopping coughs. Mimosa pudica branches and leaves are made into an extract that can be used as a medicine to treat adenocarcinoma.

Chasteberry is often used to treat nervous breakdown, insomnia, bronchitis, conjunctivitis, hepatitis, enteritis, urolithiasis, rheumatism, high blood pressure. Dosage is from 10 to 15 g. Do not overdose. Pregnant women should not use. Note: SubstanceMimosine in chasteberry is mildly toxic, people who eat plants containing this toxin may experience hair loss.

Dr. Vo Van Chi introduces some remedies from the mimosa plant as follows:

1. Nervous breakdown, insomnia: 15 g of Chasteberry used alone or combined with 15 g of Vernonia cinerea and 30 g of Oxalis repens. Decoct and drink.

2. Chronic bronchitis: 30 g of Chasteberry, 16 g of Peristrophe bivalvis root. Boil all in water, divide into 2 doses to drink during the day.

3. Pain in the lower back, aching tendons and bones:20-30gRoast the mimosa pudica, soak it in wine, then fry it until golden brown, and drink the decoction. You can also combine it with 20 grams of chrysanthemum root and grapefruit, 10 grams of ginseng root and licorice root.

4. Cure AIDS, mild fever, general discomfort, red rash, watery skin: Ham thu thao (mimosa), thuc bach tiep, phellodendron, purslane, cassia seed, pomegranate peel, all in equal amounts. Boil all, strain to get the concentrated water for bathing or washing. In addition, use 2g of realgar powder mixed with egg white to apply to the painful area.
