Remedies for urinary retention

Urinary retention is called lung clo in Oriental medicine. The cause is due to damp heat, blood stasis, stone stasis, or compression by neighboring organs, causing the urethra to become blocked.

For treatment, Oriental medicine has effective remedies for each clinical condition as follows:

Urinary retention due to damp heat: Patients have symptoms of painful and frequent urination, red urine, burning sensation in the bladder and urethra; often accompanied by headache, back pain, fever, bitter mouth, yellow tongue coating... Treatment is to clear heat, remove dampness, and promote urination. Use one of the following prescriptions:

Lesson 1:16g white basil, 16g betel grass, 10g honeysuckle, 12g forsythia, 12g rehmannia, 16g plantago, 10g corn silk. Boil and drink 1 dose per day. Uses: clears heat, promotes urination, eliminates dampness.

Lesson 2: 16g of Chinese clematis root, 16g of white hairy root, 20g of Chinese smilax glabra, 12g of Chinese clematis root, 16g of fish mint, 16g of plantain, 20g of mulberry leaves, 16g of pumpkin peel, 16g of bitter melon, 16g of licorice root. Boil and drink 1 dose per day. Uses: cooling, anti-inflammatory, diuretic.

Urinary retention due to stones: The patient has symptoms of urinary retention, back pain, pain in the genitals and spreading to the surrounding area. Red urine sometimes mixed with blood, in some cases colic pain, unable to urinate makes the patient very uncomfortable. Treatment is anti-inflammatory, stone removal (dissolving and expelling stones). Use one of the following formulas:

Lesson 1: 20g moneywort, 16g corn silk, 20g mimosa, 16g pumpkin root, 20g bamboo leaves, 16g coriander, 16g motherwort. Boil and drink 1 dose per day. Uses: anti-inflammatory, diuretic, litholytic.

Lesson 2: 20g bitter melon, 20g mimosa, 20g cogon root, 10g chicken gizzard lining, 16g scratch grass, 20g fish mint, 10g honeysuckle, 16g white basil, 16g sea gold sand, 20g Vietnamese coriander. Boil and drink 1 dose per day. Uses: anti-inflammatory, expels stones.

Urinary retention due to trauma:Patients have symptoms of painful and frequent urination, yellow urine, sometimes pink with blood, pain in the lower abdomen, white tongue coating, and active pulse. Treatment is diuretic, blood circulation, and replenishing the middle and qi. Use the following prescription: 12g of raw rehmannia root, 6g of Chinese clematis root, 16g of bamboo leaves, 12g of ginseng, 12g of schisandra root, 12g of astragalus root, 12g of atractylodes macrocephala, 12g of bupleurum, 16g of ginseng, and 10g of codonopsis pilosula. Boil and drink 1 dose per day. Uses: replenishing qi and activating blood, promoting urination, and relieving pain.

Postoperative urinary retention: Symptoms of a full bladder, pain, urinary retention, the muscles and nerves in the pelvic area are shocked, leading to stiffness, causing the urethra to spasm and become blocked. The patient has pain, urinary retention, and does not dare to move vigorously. Treatment is to relax the muscles, prevent spasms, restore nerve function, and restore the balance of yin and yang.

Use the following prescription: 20g of Sand Root, 16g of prepared Polygonum multiflorum, 16g of dried tea, 10g of Morinda officinalis. Boil and drink 1 dose per day, divided into 3 times. Uses: antispasmodic, stimulating and restoring the central nervous system's control function.

Note:Diuretics should not be used in this case.
