Discussing solutions for sustainable development of shrimp industry

(Baonghean.vn) - Aquaculture in general and shrimp farming in particular are among the economic sectors heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, especially when there are still many shortcomings within the "internal industry".

On July 16, chaired by Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held an online conference with 28 coastal provinces and cities on solutions for shrimp industry development in 2021 and implementation of Decision No. 339 of the Prime Minister on approving the Strategy for Vietnam's Fisheries Development to 2030, with a vision to 2045.

Export turnover reached 3.7 billion USD

In 2020, despite the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic,export turnoverVietnam's shrimp farming revenue still reached 3.7 billion USD. In the first 6 months of this year, the country produced 55 billion shrimp seeds, shrimp farming area reached 742,000 hectares; shrimp farming output reached 373,000 tons, export turnover reached 1.5 billion USD.

Discussing and setting goals for the shrimp industry in the coming time, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien also pointed out the difficulties and challenges that the shrimp industry will have to face.

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the consumption market is unstable, shrimp prices have decreased, input material prices have increased; there is still a situation of raising shrimp of unknown origin, not yet quarantined; many households still abuse chemicals in shrimp farming; farming infrastructure is not guaranteed, causing environmental pollution.

Small-scale farming and low product quality still exist; in particular, production is not yet linked to businesses and consumer markets.
From there, the conference discussed solutions to implement Decision No. 339 of the Prime Minister on approvingDevelopment strategyVietnam's fisheries to 2030, vision to 2045.

Accordingly, the goal of developing aquaculture into an industryimportant economyof the country, large-scale commodity production associated with industrialization, modernization, sustainable development and proactive adaptation to climate change; having a reasonable structure and form of production organization, high productivity, quality and efficiency; having a prestigious brand, competitiveness and international integration; the material and spiritual life of the people is constantly improved, ensuring social security...

Strengthening monitoring of aquaculture areas
In Nghe An, in the first 6 months of the year, shrimp seed production facilities in the area produced and raised 1.6 billion shrimp seeds; areashrimp farmingBrackish water reached over 1,600 hectares, up 7.08% over the same period in 2020; Saltwater and brackish shrimp farming output reached nearly 4,300 tons, up 25.33% over the same period in 2020.

Notably, many households have applied advanced processes and technologies in shrimp farming, bringing high economic efficiency, yielding 15 - 20 tons/ha, being environmentally friendly and developing sustainably. The supply of aquatic feed, aquaculture environmental treatment products, and aquatic veterinary drugs for commercial shrimp farming has basically met the demand.

In the last 6 months of the year, Nghe An plans to continue promotingcheck, monitoraquaculture areas and quality of aquatic breeds; monitoring and warning of disease environment in aquaculture, improving and enhancing the quality of farming environment, developing modern and sustainable shrimp farming industry.
