Madrid Open Semi-finals: "Four Heavenly Kings" are gone

May 11, 2013 12:48

The Madrid Open has never been as "shocking" as the 2013 season, when all four highest-ranked players in the men's singles category could not make it to the semi-finals.

After Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, two tennis players in the top 4 in the world today, Andy Murray and David Ferrer, also had to sadly say goodbye, after defeats against Tomas Berdych and Rafael Nadal.

Entering the quarter-finals, Murray started the match quite impressively and took the lead after the 7th game to lead 4-3. However, Berdych also showed his mettle when he excellently brought the match to 6-6 before winning the nerve-wracking tie-break at the extra point 7-3.

Murray missed his appointment once again.

The second set was similar as the two sides only tied the score after 4 games and Berdych took the lead again 3-2 before going straight to victory 6-4.

With this defeat, Andy Murray's hunt for his first title on clay still seems impossible, as he appears to be too weak in important matches.

As for Berdych, he has now moved ahead of the Scot in the race for the 400 Club with his 402nd career win – one more than Murray. In the semi-finals, Berdych will face Stanislas Wawrinka – who defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.

In contrast to Murray, in the most difficult times, Rafael Nadal still knew how to rise up strongly to win against his compatriot David Ferrer.

Nadal did not enter the quarter-finals very well, continuously letting Ferrer take a 4-1 lead, before winning with a score of 6-4 in the first set.

In the second set, Ferrer continued to put the "king of clay" through a lot of trouble. However, at the most difficult moment (down 6-5), Nadal rose up strongly to win the tie-break with a score of 7-3, equalizing the gap after two sets.

After letting Nadal come back, Ferrer almost gave up physically and mentally and lost 0-6, giving up the semi-final ticket he thought he had secured to his opponent.

With this victory and the "quarter-final elimination" of the "heavenly king", Nadal seems to be more lonely than ever on his journey to conquer the Madrid Open 2013.

In the semi-finals, he only had to face his compatriot Pablo Andujar - the world No. 113 player who defeated Kei Nishikori 6-3, 7-5. Kei Nishikori was the one who caused a shock in the previous round when he turned Roger Federer into a former champion./.
