On July 30, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the UN unarmed observer mission was attacked by Syrian government forces near the city of Homs on July 29.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said a convoy of five vehicles accompanying the head of the UN observer mission, General Babacar Gaye, was attacked by Syrian army tanks near the city of Homs and "fortunately no one was injured."

In addition, Mr. Ban Ki-moon also urged the Syrian Government to stop the violent repression against dissidents and rebels fighting to overthrow the regime of President Bashar Assad.

According to AFP, a source in the capital Damascus said that on July 30, the Syrian army recaptured part of Salaheddin district, controlled by rebel forces, in the city of Aleppo, the most populous city in this Middle Eastern country.

According to the above source, on the third day of fierce raids on districts controlled by rebel forces in this northern city, "the Syrian army has taken control of part of Salaheddin district and continues the counter-attack"./.
