With a total of 13 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 9 bronze medals, Russia's achievements at this Olympics far exceed their achievements at Vancouver 2010. That year, this number one sports powerhouse only won 3 gold medals and ranked 11th overall.
Many believe that one of the reasons Russia won the overall title was thanks to its foreign stars. Specifically, there were 5 gold medals won by foreign athletes, including 3 gold medals by Korean speed skating star Victor Ahn and 2 by American skater Vic Wild, who does not even speak Russian fluently.
However, in all fairness, Russia also had a truly successful Olympics, winning many sports in which they had long lost their strength.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has hailed it as an “Olympic legend” because for many years Russia has not won a gold medal in this traditional sport.
“It is difficult to plan for medals. In the 2013-2014 winter sports season, we were ranked 4-5 in the world. But we worked hard to ensure that the peak performance of our athletes falls right on Sochi 2014,” said Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko.
