ASIAD men's football competition format
Recently, the Syrian Olympic team and the Afghan Olympic team have decided to withdraw from the 2023 Asian Games men's football tournament. This decision leaves only two teams in Group C of the men's football tournament, namely Uzbekistan Olympic and Hong Kong Olympic (China). Thus, the top two teams and four of the five third-placed teams with the best results will qualify for the round of 16. Uzbekistan and Hong Kong (China) will automatically qualify for the knockout round but will play two home and away matches to determine the top spot.
The above incident also helped the Vietnam Olympic team to benefit as they had 16 tickets to the knockout round out of 21 teams. Instead of 6 third-placed teams, now there are only 5 third-placed teams competing for 4 tickets to the next round. This opens up a great opportunity for coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his team because the Vietnam Olympic team with Mongolia is too weak.
According to the plan, the group stage matches will take place from September 19 to September 24. The round of 16 will take place on September 26 and 27. The quarter-finals will be held on September 30. The semi-finals will take place on October 3. The bronze and gold medal matches will take place on October 7. The Vietnamese Olympic team will have their opening match against Mongolia at 3:00 p.m. on September 19.
