The accident happened when the bus carrying dozens of passengers lost control and flew off the road, crashing into a nearby ditch.

Bangladesh police said at least 24 people were killed and more than 22 others injured in a serious traffic accident that occurred on the morning of April 9 in Faridpur, about 100km from the capital Dhaka.

The accident occurred when a bus carrying dozens of passengers lost control and flew off the road, crashing into a nearby ditch, killing 15 people on the spot and 9 others on the way to the hospital.

Bangladesh has one of the highest traffic accident fatality rates in the world, largely due to poor highway conditions, poorly maintained vehicles, poor traffic awareness and lack of effective traffic support infrastructure.

According to a report by the Accident Research Center of the Bangladesh University of Technology, each year about 10,000 to 20,000 people die in traffic accidents in this country and this number accounts for 75% of the causes of death in rural areas./
