"Ensuring security in the East Sea is a prerequisite for development"
On October 2, Head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the United Nations, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga attended and spoke at the general discussion of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly with the theme "The United Nations: A roadmap for peace, security and respect for human rights."

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga said that since its establishment 70 years ago, the United Nations has truly become a center for coordinating global efforts to address common challenges, making an important contribution to maintaining international peace and security, promoting development and protecting human rights.
The United Nations always upholds and promotes the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter, especially the principles of respecting independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, not threatening or using force, and peacefully resolving international disputes.
Faced with new challenges, the Head of the Vietnamese Delegation said that the United Nations needs to continue to play a central role in addressing global issues such as conflicts and disputes, nuclear disarmament, climate change, terrorism, extreme violence, poverty, social inequality and towards sustainable development. To do that, Vietnam believes that the United Nations, including the Security Council, needs to continue to reform to operate more effectively, democratically and transparently.
Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga affirmed that Vietnam welcomes the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and is committed to doing its utmost to successfully implement this program. Vietnam focuses on putting people at the center, always ensuring the common interests of the people, and caring for, respecting and ensuring human rights.
The Ambassador stressed the importance of strong global partnerships, and called on developed countries to support developing countries in successfully implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially through financial support, technology transfer and human resource development.
At the regional level, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga said that Vietnam is working with countries in the region to build the ASEAN Community and promote the common development of the region. The Ambassador stressed that peace and stability in the region, including ensuring safety, security and freedom of navigation in the East Sea, are prerequisites for development. Therefore, Vietnam strives with relevant countries to resolve disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, actively and fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and soon build a Code of Conduct (COC).
The general debate of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly took place from September 28 to October 3.
Previously, on October 1, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga attended and spoke at the high-level meeting on "Maintaining international peace and security" organized by the President of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly under resolution 69/316 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
The meeting was attended by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and many leaders and representatives of countries.
At the forum, participating countries presented nearly 50 papers, assessing the international situation, security and peace threats, lessons learned over the past 70 years, and affirming new commitments to maintaining and protecting international security and peace./.
