At least 30 people were killed and hundreds more injured when a storm hit the northwestern Borga area, 197 km (122 miles) from Bangladesh's capital Dhaka.

According to local authorities, the storm hit the area last night. Most of the deaths were caused by collapsed houses. Local media showed images of the storm causing severe damage to the area, with hundreds of trees downed, many houses flattened and traffic chaos in the area.

Bangladesh is often hit by damaging storms between March and mid-May, before the start of a four-month rainy season.
