Alarm about gender imbalance in newborns in Quy Hop

March 10, 2013 17:48

(Baonghean.vn) - According to the Quy Hop Population and Family Planning Center, in recent years, the area has experienced a very worrying gender imbalance at birth.

Typically, in 2012, out of a total of 2,273 children born in the district, on average, there were 119 boys for every 100 girls. There are localities with very high gender imbalance rates such as Chau Ly commune with 164 boys/100 girls; similarly, Quy Hop town 157/100, Chau Cuong commune 148/100, Chau Thai commune 142/100, Chau Hong 138/100...; only a few communes have a lower ratio of boys than girls: Nghia Xuan commune with 81 boys/100 girls, Bac Son 88/100, Dong Hop 94/100.

The reason is still the male-dominated ideology that leads to the intervention and selection of gender at birth, especially for the third child. Besides, although it is a mountainous area, some communes are in extremely difficult areas, but with the current medical equipment and technology, many couples can easily check and choose the gender before giving birth.

Faced with the above situation, along with advising the District Party Committee and the District People's Committee to handle 156/179 cases of third child births, including proposing strict handling according to State regulations for 15 cases of cadres and party members violating population policy, the District Population Center is actively applying technical measures and promoting communication work at the grassroots level to reduce the third child birth rate and gradually reduce the gender imbalance.
