Iraqi authorities said the attacks occurred mainly in the capital Baghdad and surrounding areas, with many bombings targeting Shiite Muslim areas and Iraqi security forces.
In a Shiite area of eastern Baghdad, a car bomb exploded near an army patrol, killing four people and wounding 17. A similar bombing in a Sunni area north of Baghdad killed three people, including two Iraqi soldiers, and wounded 14 others.
In Anbar province, the governor survived an assassination attempt by insurgents yesterday. Police in the northern city of Mosul also reported a suicide bombing at a security checkpoint, killing three people.
Iraq is facing its deadliest wave of attacks since the US withdrew troops in 2011. More than 500 people have been killed in Iraq this May, while April was the deadliest month in Iraq in five years.
No group has claimed responsibility for the violence. However, suspicions are now falling on an armed group linked to the al-Qaeda terrorist network in Iraq. Iraqi officials say other armed groups in the country are also stepping up their activities and expanding their attacks across Iraq./.
