Taiwanese authorities said flight GE222 from Taipei to Magong City on Penghu Island crashed after a failed emergency landing. While Taiwan's civil aviation authority said 51 people died in the crash, the head of the local fire department put the death toll at 45.

“Firefighters are still trying to put out the fire and find a way to get the victims out of the plane,” an official from Taiwan’s civil aviation authority told Reuters. “The situation is very tense and there is no exact information on the number of victims.”

According to initial information, the plane appeared to have attempted an emergency landing due to bad weather caused by Typhoon Matmo, which had just hit Taiwan earlier.

Reuters reported that after the first attempt at an emergency landing failed, the pilot attempted a second landing while losing contact with air traffic control and crashed. Meanwhile, another source said that the plane lost contact with air traffic control shortly after takeoff. This information has not yet been verified./.
