In this counter-offensive campaign, Ukraine faced a difficult challenge, having to overcome Russian defenses and clear the way to send its troops deep into the front.

Business Insider journalist Chris Panella said that the width of the mine clearance route of the Ukrainian Armed Forces must be at least 16 km long, if they want to preserve Western armored vehicles, and penetrate the defense system of the Russian army.

“Ukraine would need to clear a 10-mile (16-kilometer) path to successfully penetrate the Russian defenses. Failure to do so would leave Western armored vehicles and vital cargo vulnerable to Russian counter-attacks, missiles, and artillery,” commented journalist Chris Panella.

Although Ukraine was required to protect and use tanks and armored vehicles sparingly, journalist Panella assessed that during the counterattack of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Western armored vehicles were powerless when facing Russia's "formidable defense": minefields stretching dozens of kilometers, deep trenches, dragon teeth obstacles, and anti-tank ditches made Western armor powerless.

Panella noted that, in addition to defensive fortifications, Russian attacks also caused great damage to Ukraine, preventing Kiev from achieving its stated goals of breaking through the Sea of Azov, and attacking Russian forces concentrated along the south near Mariupol.
