Museum of Ethnology: Striving to meet international standards

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is always loyal to its operational orientation of promoting quality from display, performance, printing to communication work, striving to meet the standards of advanced museums in the world.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology has just been awarded the "Excellence" certificate in 2012 by Tripadvisor, a prestigious website that evaluates the quality of tourist destinations in the world. This is the result of a survey by this website at the end of September.


According to regulations, to be rated as “Excellent”, tourist attractions need to achieve a rating of 4 stars or higher (the highest is 5 stars), based on comments and the number of comments from visitors reflected on the Tripadvisor website within 12 months.


With 232 excellent votes and 188 very good votes, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is rated 4.5 stars and is ranked as one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Hanoi.


Coming here, visitors can learn a lot about the history and heritage of Vietnam. The artifacts with specific instructions and the unique outdoor exhibition area have recreated quite fully the identity and customs of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology currently stores 27,000 artifacts, of which 23,000 are about the Vietnamese ethnic communities, the rest are about ethnic groups in Southeast Asia and other countries. The volume of audio-visual materials includes 11,000 types of documentary photos (film and digital) on different topics. The museum also currently stores over 3,000 tapes, discs, and audio-visual documents.


The museum has organized about 100 exhibitions, including those that left unforgettable impressions on the public such as: the exhibition on the subsidy period, the exhibition on 100 years of Vietnamese weddings, and the exhibition on the lives of people infected with HIV/AIDS.


Since its inauguration (November 12, 1997) to date, the Museum of Ethnology has attracted 3.2 million domestic and foreign visitors.


This place has become a familiar destination for many Hanoians during the Mid-Autumn Festival, June 1st and the beginning of the New Year, and is also an address chosen by many students from many majors of universities and colleges to do internships and volunteer work.


According to Dr. Luu Hung, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, the high rating of visitors on the Tripadvisor website is the result of the activities of the Museum of Ethnology over the past 15 years. The Museum has always been loyal to its operational orientation of promoting quality from exhibitions, performances, printing to communication work. The Museum of Ethnology strives to meet the standards of advanced museums in the world, in which, maintaining the orientation, focusing on developing activities to serve the public by diversifying activities to meet the increasing needs of viewers.


The Museum has completed upgrading the bronze drum building to display the ethnic groups of Vietnam and is upgrading the outdoor exhibition area, striving to have an exhibition area on ethnic groups in Southeast Asia.
