(Baonghean.vn) After nearly 10 years of establishment, the Pu Huong Nature Reserve Management Board (PNRMB) has actively implemented measures to protect more than 40,000 hectares of forest. In addition, the Board has also paid special attention to reforestation, fire prevention and prevention of violations of the Forest Law.

Pu Huong Nature Reserve has an area of 40,127 hectares, spread over 5 districts: Que Phong, Quy Chau, Tuong Duong, Con Cuong and Quy Hop.

After nearly 10 years of operation, the Management Board has always done a good job of forest protection. In addition, illegal forest exploitation activities have only stopped at a small scale, there have been no hot spots of illegal exploitation. In the first 10 months of 2011, the Forest Protection Department has handled 49 cases of Forest Law violations, confiscating nearly 100 m3 of various types of wood. Notably, from 2002 to present, there have been no forest fires in the forest area managed by the Department.

Because the reserve covers 5 districts, the number of people living near the forest in the buffer zone is very large. In this area, more than 50% of households are poor. The lives of ethnic people mainly depend on forest resources and deforestation for farming, so the management of the reserve is extremely difficult. To carry out this task well, the leaders of Pu Huong Nature Reserve have proactively made a plan to advise the local government to strengthen the direction, consolidate, and establish teams and groups to coordinate propaganda and handle gathering points of forest products, violations of farming, and subjects buying and selling forest products and hunting. Mobilizing people to implement sedentary farming, guiding people to cultivate in accordance with the State's policies. Organizing the signing of commitments on forest fire prevention and fighting for 31 villages bordering the core zone in 11 buffer zone communes with 2,497 participants. Organizing the signing of commitments on forest protection to villages, hamlets and families...

Furthermore, the Management Board has implemented many projects for people to participate in developing family economy and protecting forests. Typically, the investment project to plant 5 million hectares of forest (Project 661) has been implemented since 2008. 314 families have participated. The production forest planting project (Project 147) has been implemented in 6 communes of Quy Hop district. After 3 years of implementation, households have planted more than 1,250 hectares of forest. In addition, the Management Board has also organized a number of projects such as: organizing small-scale livelihood models, the main content of which is distributing breeding cows to households in 3 villages in Nga My commune (Tuong Duong); attracting clean water supply projects for 2 villages Nut (Binh Chuan commune, Con Cuong district) and Pieng village (Cam Muon commune, Que Phong district). From here, people's lives are improved, people have a greater sense of responsibility in participating in forest protection and denouncing violators.
