Protecting and promoting the natural heritage values of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve
Contributing to measures to enhance the effectiveness of the Management Board of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve, representatives of departments, branches and localities proposed many practical ideas to continue to protect and effectively promote the value of the province's natural heritage; especially implementing livelihood models under the forest canopy.
On December 26, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with relevant agencies and units to organize a conference to summarize the activities of the BR Project and the results of the implementation of the tasks of the Office of the Management Board of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve in 2024, with orientations for 2025.
Attending the conference were Mr. Bui Xuan Truong - Manager of the BR Project Management Board, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; representatives of the People's Committees of districts, communes, relevant agencies and units. Mr. Nguyen Danh Hung - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Deputy Manager of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve chaired the conference.

The Management Board of Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve is responsible for managing and coordinating activities to better meet the 7 UNESCO criteria for the World Biosphere Reserve; promoting the 3 functions of the Biosphere Reserve (conservation, support, development).
In 2024, the Office of the Management Board of the Western Biosphere Reserve successfully completed its tasks, especially coordinating the implementation of many effective programs and projects. Typically, such as coordinating the implementation of scientific research with the goal of improving the efficiency of providing forest environmental services; evaluating and proposing solutions to implement the Sustainable Forestry Development Program in the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve; supporting the implementation of biodiversity conservation and species conservation activities in Ky Son district; supporting the construction of livelihood models in the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve...

In particular, special attention is paid to coordinating the implementation of the Project "Integrating natural resource management and biodiversity conservation goals into socio-economic development planning and management of biosphere reserves in Vietnam" (abbreviated as BR project).
The BR project is funded by the Global Environment Facility through the United Nations Development Programme and will be implemented over 5 years (from 2019-2024) by the Department of Nature Conservation and Biodiversity, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
Project implementation locations are in Hanoi and 3 Biosphere Reserves: Cu Lao Cham Biosphere Reserve - Quang Nam province, Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve - Dong Nai province and Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve.

At the conference, there were many enthusiastic opinions from delegates representing agencies, units, and localities, contributing many solutions to promote more effective coordination in implementing common goals and tasks, contributing to preserving and promoting the natural heritage values of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve.

Many delegates expressed their hope that the Management Board of the Biosphere Reserve as well as relevant localities and units with their own functions and tasks will actively coordinate and implement contents to promote the value of the province's world biosphere reserve.
In particular, priority is given to the following contents: replicating livelihood models; strengthening communication work; enhancing connections, exchanges and sharing between localities, agencies, units and organizations in related activities; supporting the development of community tourism in core areas and buffer zones of the Biosphere Reserve...
The Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve covers more than 2,000 mountainous villages of the province, with a population of more than 1 million people. The core zone of the Biosphere Reserve is located in 21 communes with a population of 119,377 people, accounting for 11.31% of the total population of the area. This is an area with special-use forests of extremely special natural value, a standard model of ecosystems and biodiversity. The buffer zone of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve is located in 68 communes, with a population of about 248,219 people, and there are still many areas with high biodiversity value.
