President Obama said that in the chaos of the two-year civil war in Syria, the place was completely out of the control of the government and became a promised land for terrorism to revive. Next, terrorist groups have succeeded in "attracting foreign fighters to their pointless jihad." And Syria has become "Ground Zero for radical jihadists around the world." The term "Ground Zero" is known to refer to both the concept of explosion and the name given to the place where the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York were crashed by terrorists using hijacked airplanes on September 11, 2001.
Since early August, the US President has acknowledged that the jihadists have grown significantly beyond the expectations of intelligence agencies and political leaders in the region. Once again, Mr. Obama said that the US had overestimated the Iraqi army's ability to repel terrorist groups and accused former soldiers of Saddam Hussein's regime of aiding the terrorist groups.
In early September, following the execution of two American journalists by the Islamic State (IS), Barack Obama announced a strategic plan to counter terrorism aimed at “destroying the self-proclaimed Islamic State”. President Obama also decided to form an international coalition to repel the threat of terrorism and expand attacks in Syria. In an interview with CBS, Mr. Obama said, “It is important that we recognize that part of the solution is military… We need to destroy the headquarters, the weapons depots, cut off the ability to refuel and finance, and we need to stop the flow of foreigners to join terrorist groups, especially in areas like Iraq and Syria.”
