Barcelona's board of directors said they have yet to negotiate a new contract with Lionel Messi, despite the superstar's recent good form.

Reports from Spain last week suggested that Barcelona had begun talks with Messi over a contract extension. Some newspapers also said that Messi's father, Jorge, had travelled to Spain to negotiate with the Nou Camp team about his son's future.

However, recently, Barcelona vice president Jordi Mestre said that the negotiation process for a new contract with Messi has not been carried out. However, he is confident that the Catalan team will be successful in keeping the Argentine superstar early next year.

"Contract negotiations with Messi have not yet begun. However, we believe that after Neymar and Luis Suarez sign new contracts, we will continue to successfully convince Messi to do the same in early 2017," Mr. Mestre told Movistar Plus.

It is a bit strange that Barcelona is not keen on negotiating a new contract with Messi. Recently, there has been some information that there are many teams interested in the 29-year-old striker. Among them, there are also invitations from China, a place that has attracted many world football stars recently.

Messi's form has been very good recently as he has continuously contributed to Barcelona's victories. In the match in round 16 of La Liga against neighboring team Espanyol early this morning, the Argentine striker also scored 1 goal and had a hand in 2 others, helping Barca win 4-1.

With his winning goal in the last match, Messi became the player with the most goals in the Catalan derby. He now has 15 goals in Barcelona matches against Espanyol, the most in the history of this derby.

In addition, Messi and Suarez, who scored a double in the last match, rose to the top of the La Liga top scorer list this season with 12 goals each, 2 more than Cristiano Ronaldo.

The victory over Espanyol brought Barcelona closer to Real Madrid when the gap between the two teams is only 3 points (34 compared to 37), although the Royal team still has 1 match left to play.
