Reuters and AFP quoted Western diplomats as saying that on June 18, the P5+1 group (including the US, Russia, China, the UK, France and Germany) and Iran met in Moscow for a round of negotiations aimed at narrowing differences over Tehran's nuclear program and preventing the risk of a new war in the Middle East.

The P5+1 group hopes to persuade Iran to stop producing highly enriched uranium, which they suspect is a step towards building nuclear weapons.

Iran, which denies its nuclear program is for military purposes, has rejected the group's proposal. "The talks have begun," said an unnamed diplomat, without giving further details.

Earlier, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on his personal website on the evening of June 17 that Tehran was ready to stop enriching uranium at the 20% level if Europe committed to transferring nuclear fuel to the Islamic republic's reactors./.
