Largest ever seizure of precious wood transportation on river
On October 27, news from the Se San 4 River Inter-sectoral Control Station, Kon Tum province, said that the station's inter-sectoral force had just arrested the largest ever shipment of rare group 1 timber by river.
Previously - on the evening of October 25, while on patrol, the working group of the Se San 4 River Inter-sectoral Station discovered a group of illegal loggers transporting a large amount of wood from Ia Gin stream to Se San 3A lake - in village 9, Mo Rai commune, Sa Thay district.
Illegal timber transport just caught.
When discovered, this group of illegal loggers used bricks and stones to attack the patrol team to disperse the evidence. With the support of the Inter-sectoral Control Team, the police, border guards..., the Se San 4 riverway authorities seized the entire volume of wood and towed it back to the station that night, including 80 boxes of rare group 1 sawn rosewood, with a volume of 8.8m3, equivalent to a volume of nearly 15m3 of round wood.
The southern Sa Thay area of Kon Tum province, bordering Gia Lai province and the Cambodian border, is currently a hot spot for illegal encroachment, settlement and exploitation of forest products. Taking advantage of the rugged terrain of the border area and the 70km of river along the Se San 3A and Se San 4 hydropower reservoirs, illegal loggers often break into this area to steal timber.
From mid-August 2012 to present, the Sa Thay South Inter-sectoral Control Station has handled 8 cases of illegal logging and transportation of forest products, seizing 238 wooden boxes (22,056m3) of all kinds, mainly rare species in groups 1 and 2 such as rosewood, go, cam xe, cho, sen...; confiscated 1 chain saw, 1 wood winch, 1 flintlock gun, 1 cart, advised on handling 1 case of illegal concealment of forest products with a fine of 40 million VND.
