Closing of the 132nd IPU General Assembly

On the afternoon of April 1, at the National Convention Center, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung - Chairman of the 132nd IPU Assembly solemnly declared the closing of the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly.

Attending the closing ceremony were President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Saber Chowdhury; Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam, President of IPU-132 Nguyen Sinh Hung; Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungong, along with many leaders of parliaments and parliamentarians of countries participating in IPU-132.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung emphasized that after 5 days of active work, with a high sense of responsibility, the 132nd IPU General Assembly was a great success.

The Assembly discussed many important parliamentary issues, especially the general theme “Sustainable Development Goals: Turning Words into Action”. The Assembly’s Specialized Committees also discussed and the IPU adopted resolutions on important issues such as cyber warfare, water governance, international law in protecting national sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs and human rights.

Other issues related to the United Nations, young parliamentarians, women's rights, the Association of Parliamentary Secretaries General, protecting the rights of parliamentarians, HIV-AIDS, children, democracy in the digital age, global parliamentary reports, eliminating the risk of nuclear war... were also discussed at the specialized committees and forums of the General Assembly.

The Assembly also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the IPU Women Parliamentarians' Conference and the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration on the Rights of Women.

President Nguyen Sinh Hung emphasized that the most important results of the General Assembly were expressed in the Hanoi Declaration. This is a document expressing the aspirations and commitments of the IPU and its member parliaments in building and promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that the United Nations is building until 2030.

The Hanoi Declaration will be sent to the United Nations General Assembly Summit in September this year, President Nguyen Sinh Hung said.

President Nguyen Sinh Hung affirmed that the results of the 132nd IPU General Assembly spoke for the common voice of parliaments of all countries, contributing to the protection of peace, strengthening friendship and cooperation between countries and parliaments, and promoting new developments of the international community after 2015.
