Closing of the 3rd Conference on Literary Criticism and Theory

After nearly two days of work, on the morning of June 5 in Tam Dao, Vinh Phuc, the 3rd Conference on Literary Theory and Criticism closed.

On the morning of June 5, more than half of the conference was devoted to young critics. Critics such as Tran Thien Khanh, Doan Anh Duong, Phan Tuan Anh... had the opportunity to express their thoughts and opinions on the reality of teaching literary criticism in universities - things that need to change; literature that is oriented towards life but not vulgar literature; new approaches to specialized research; the lives of those who work in criticism...

Critic Huynh Thi Thu Hau, Quang Nam University, shared that it is difficult to find critics, but even if there were, no one would follow the profession and make a living from it.

“We teach, research and do criticism at the same time. Teaching brings us a salary and we receive that salary to do criticism. The remaining articles or the funding to pay for research articles and conferences is very low. That level is not suitable for the time, intelligence and contributions of the criticism team” - Critic Huynh Thi Thu Hau said.

With the theme "Improving the quality and effectiveness of literary criticism theory", the 3rd Conference on Literary Criticism Theory attracted more than 60 presentations, addressing many aspects of literary criticism theory, including many contents that are of public interest such as: literary criticism - need to correctly identify the nature; literary translation criticism; literary criticism contributes to honoring reading culture; current status of minority literary criticism...

Poet Huu Thinh - Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association affirmed that many issues of literature are now being handled in a more transparent manner. The protection of writers and poets with new paths such as Nguyen Ngoc Tu, Hoang Minh Tuong, Nguyen Viet Chien and their works has many contributions from literary critics. The professionalization direction in the coming time will be a key factor to improve the quality and effectiveness of literary criticism theory.

“Our entire literature must be professionalized. First and foremost is critical theory. To do so, we must expand the theoretical framework. Second, we must increase dialogue, even with problematic works. Third, I would like to reiterate Professor Tran Dinh Su's opinion on this issue: critical theory must contribute to building a new system of values. But first of all, approaching a literary work must not go beyond three issues: ideology, art and language” - Poet Huu Thinh added./.
