The US Navy provides a panoramic view of life inside the state-of-the-art stealth destroyer USS Zumwalt.

Interior of the USS Zumwalt destroyer

The US military has released images of the inside of the destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000). This is an interesting way to see life on the US Navy's most modern destroyer, according to National Interest.

Every nook and cranny of the USS Zumwalt, from the control room to the medical facility to the fully equipped gym to the restrooms, is shown in the video. Some sailors were even ironing their clothes while being filmed.

The USS Zumwalt destroyer is capable of performing a range of missions including deterrence, power projection, maritime domain control and combat command. Construction began in 2008 and was scheduled to be commissioned in 2013, but due to delays, the ship did not enter service until October 2016.

The US Navy plans to order 32 Zumwalt-class ships to replace its fleet of Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. However, the construction cost is too high, up to 4 billion USD/ship, so the US Congress decided to buy only three ships and continue the Arleigh Burke program.

Just a month after its launch and before sea trials, the USS Zumwalt suffered a water leak in its auxiliary engine lubrication system, requiring two weeks of repairs. The destroyer was supposed to be able to fire 600 shells and hit targets as far as 70 miles away. But the shells for the Zumwalt class cost $800,000 each, far beyond the Navy’s purchasing power.
