Hue Hospital successfully used autologous hematopoietic stem cells
Hue Central Hospital has just successfully treated 3 cases using autologous hematopoietic stem cells, saving the lives of the patients.
This is the result of the State-level scientific project "Research on the application of autologous stem cells in the treatment of breast cancer and ovarian cancer" chaired by Associate Professor - Doctor Nguyen Duy Thang, Deputy Director of Hue Central Hospital, and colleagues at the Hospital for research and application over the past two years.
The latest patient discharged from the hospital on February 13 was Ms. Le Kieu Diem, 40 years old, residing in Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province.
Ms. Diem was admitted to the Hue Central Hospital on September 4, 2014, diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, which had metastasized to the brain, lungs, and bone metastasis in the vertebral body. Her health condition was extremely critical, with very little time left to live.
After collecting enough stem cells on October 23 and 24, 2014, patient Le Kieu Diem was treated with high-dose chemotherapy and targeted therapy in a sterile environment to destroy all cancer cells in the breast and brain.
When all the cells in the body were destroyed, patient Diem fell into a state of irreversible bone marrow failure. On January 27, doctors at Hue Central Hospital transplanted stem cells back into the patient to create new types of main cells in the body, helping to stabilize the patient's health.
Previously, two patients were saved thanks to the method of using autologous hematopoietic stem cells, namely patient Tran Thi Thu, 49 years old, residing in Kim Long ward, Hue city and patient Le Thi Sau, 52 years old, residing in Huong Thuy town, Thua Thien - Hue province.
Both patients had advanced ovarian cancer but have now fully recovered after being treated with autologous hematopoietic stem cells.
Associate Professor - Doctor Nguyen Duy Thang, Deputy Director of Hue Central Hospital, head of the project, said: After applying hematopoietic stem cells to treat breast cancer and ovarian cancer for patients at the hospital, the program has had initial success, opening up new prospects for application to many patients with late-stage breast cancer and ovarian cancer at Hue Central Hospital in particular and the Vietnamese health sector in general./.
