Nghe An Friendship General Hospital is a regional general hospital in the North Central region (according to Decision No. 1670/QD-BYT dated March 25, 2021, of the Ministry of Health). The hospital has been licensed by the Ministry of Health to perform organ transplantation since 2019. On September 16, 2020, the Ministry of Health recognized the hospital as a medical facility qualified to perform kidney harvesting and transplantation from living donors and brain-dead donors.
After receiving accreditation, the hospital successfully performed 16 kidney transplants, including 4 from brain-dead donors. During this time, Nghe An Friendship General Hospital also did an excellent job of advising the public and reaching out to potential brain-dead patients to encourage organ donation. In 2024 alone, the hospital advised and encouraged 99 individuals to register for organ donation...

In addition, Nghe An Friendship General Hospital has prepared the necessary infrastructure, invested in equipment, and trained staff to perform liver transplantation from living donors and brain-dead donors. The development of this modern technique aims to help the people of the province access the benefits of advanced technology; it also contributes to the development of surgical expertise and other specialties.
Liver transplantation is the "pinnacle" technique in the field of organ transplantation. It is the most effective treatment for certain end-stage liver diseases. Liver transplantation is also the only method for completely curing congenital biliary atresia in children; it increases the chances of curing liver cancer, reduces the risk of recurrence, and gives life to patients with acute liver failure.
In Vietnam today, the prevalence of hepatitis B is high (approximately 8.6 million people); the incidence of liver and biliary diseases is increasing. Of these, about 30% of patients have end-stage liver disease, with a very high mortality rate... At Nghe An Friendship General Hospital alone, the gastroenterology clinic is currently managing 537 outpatients with cirrhosis, and the virus-parasite clinic is managing 706 outpatients with viral cirrhosis.

On September 19, 2024, the Ministry of Health established a professional council to assess the conditions for performing liver transplantation from living donors and brain-dead donors at the Provincial Friendship General Hospital. The professional council highly appreciated the hospital's preparation and development of the technique.
On October 16, 2024, the Ministry of Health issued Decision No. 3055/QD-BYT recognizing the eligibility of Nghe An Friendship General Hospital to perform liver transplantation from living donors and brain-dead donors.
With this recognition, Nghe An Friendship General Hospital is the first provincial-level hospital in the country to meet the requirements and have perfected the techniques for liver harvesting and transplantation from living donors and brain-dead donors.
