Nghe An General Friendship Hospital is the first provincial hospital in the country qualified to perform liver transplants.

On the morning of October 18, in Vinh city, Nghe An Department of Health held the opening ceremony.Conference on orientation for specialized medical developmentin Vinh city. At the conference, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Tri Thuc presented the Decision of the Ministry of Health on the recognitionNghe An General Friendship Hospitalqualified to perform liver harvesting and transplantation from living donors and brain-dead donors.

Nghe An General Hospital is a tertiary general hospital in the North Central region (according to Decision No. 1670/QD-BYT dated March 25, 2021 of the Ministry of Health). The hospital has been licensed by the Ministry of Health to perform organ transplants since 2019. And on September 16, 2020, the Ministry of Health recognized the hospital as a medical facility qualified to perform the technique of removing and transplanting kidneys from living donors and from brain-dead donors.

After being recognized, the hospital has successfully performed 16 kidney transplants, including 4 transplants from brain-dead donors. During this time, Nghe An General Hospital has also done a great job of consulting people and approaching potential brain-dead patients to do a good job of mobilizing. In 2024 alone, the hospital has consulted and mobilized 99 cases to register for organ donation...

In addition, Nghe An General Hospital has also prepared facilities, invested in equipment, and trained staff to perform liver removal and transplantation techniques in living people and brain-dead donors. The development of modern technology aims to help the people of the province access the benefits of advanced technology; at the same time, it also helps develop the expertise of surgery and other specialties.

Liver transplantation is the “peak” technique in organ transplantation. To treat some end-stage liver diseases, liver transplantation is the most effective treatment. Liver transplantation is also the only method to completely treat congenital biliary atresia in children; increase the ability to cure liver cancer, reduce the risk of recurrence; bring life to patients with acute liver failure.

In Vietnam today, the rate of hepatitis B is high (about 8.6 million people); the rate of liver and biliary diseases is increasing. Of which, the number of patients with end-stage liver disease is about 30%, the mortality rate is very high... At Nghe An General Hospital alone, the internal medicine clinic is currently managing 537 outpatients with cirrhosis, the virus - parasite clinic is managing 706 outpatients with viral cirrhosis.

On September 19, 2024, the Ministry of Health established a professional council to assess the conditions for performing liver harvesting and transplantation techniques in living people and brain-dead donors at the Provincial General Hospital. The professional council highly appreciated the hospital's preparation and technical development.

On October 16, 2024, the Ministry of Health issued Decision No. 3055/QD-BYT on recognizing the eligibility to perform liver harvesting and transplantation techniques from living donors and brain-dead donors at Nghe An General Hospital.

With this recognition decision, Nghe An General Hospital is the first provincial hospital in the country that is qualified and has perfected the technique of taking and transplanting livers from living donors and brain-dead donors./.
