K Hospital applies new techniques to treat cancer

K Hospital (Hanoi) has just opened a molecular biology clinic that helps treat cancer by diagnosing the genes that cause the disease. This technique will help kill cancer cells directly, instead of "surrounding" and causing systemic complications like chemotherapy.

Molecular biology techniques are considered a breakthrough in the cancer industry, helping with early diagnosis and effective and accurate treatment.

Dr. Nguyen Phi Hung, Deputy Head of the Department of Cytopathology, K Hospital, said that in the past, cancer diagnosis was often based on pathology and the doctor's experience, that is, taking a sample of the tumor to test to see if it was benign or malignant. When it was found to be malignant, what type of cancer it was, from which treatment regimens were given: simple surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of all three methods.

But now, thanks to molecular biology techniques, doctors can detect abnormalities and mutations in genes, thereby using appropriate drugs to limit tumor cell proliferation.

“Many types of cancer have changes in genes and DNA segments in cells, so researchers have found drugs that target those changes to inhibit or repair faulty genes. This helps prolong the life span and quality of life of patients, reducing the toxicity of conventional treatments. Molecular biology techniques will help identify changes in genes, thereby choosing the appropriate drug,” said Dr. Hung.

Dr. Bui Dieu, Director of K Hospital, said that the implementation of molecular biology clinic marks a new and very practical step forward in cancer diagnosis and treatment in Vietnam. This is a new measure to overcome the disadvantages of the classic method of siege treatment.

K Hospital is one of the first facilities in the country to apply molecular biology techniques (in addition, there are Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital and Hanoi Medical University Hospital).
