On January 27, in Hanoi, Tri Phuoc Biotechnology Joint Stock Company and the Center for Research and Production of Adipose Tissue Stem Cells in Vietnam officially opened their cooperation.

The state-level scientific project on the application of adipose stem cell technology in disease treatment has been officially approved by the Ministry of Health. Viet Duc Hospital is the first unit to be permitted by the Ministry of Health to apply adipose stem cells in the clinical treatment of spinal cord injury with paralysis.

Project leader - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Thach, Deputy Director of Viet Duc Hospital, Director of the Institute of Trauma and Orthopedics - said that the application of fat stem cell technology opens up opportunities to treat spinal cord injuries with spinal cord paralysis for patients at a reasonable cost. Currently in Vietnam, the number of patients with spinal cord injuries who have undergone surgery at Viet Duc Hospital is up to more than 2,000 cases. Most of these patients have difficulty recovering after surgery due to damaged nerves, leaving many sequelae such as complete paralysis, quadriplegia, incontinence... Using fat stem cells will help secrete stimulants to create new nerve cells.

According to some studies in countries around the world, among nearly 2,000 patients with spinal cord paralysis who had surgery, 50% of patients treated with adipose stem cells had a recovery rate of 23%, while 50% of patients who did not use adipose stem cells had a recovery rate of only 3%. The outstanding advantages of adipose stem cells are that they are collected from adipose tissue in large quantities, are easy to collect, cause little pain to the patient, are easy to culture and clone, and do not cause side effects because the patient's own stem cells are used for treatment.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Hau Khang - Director of the Central Dermatology Hospital, Deputy Head of the scientific project - said that in the past 5 years, the Dermatology Institute has applied umbilical cord stem cell technology to effectively treat psoriasis, scleroderma, autoimmune diseases, stretch marks, melasma, hair growth, keloids... In the future, the Central Dermatology Hospital will apply adipose stem cells to treat autoimmune diseases, immune disorders, systemic lupus erythematosus, obesity...

Mr. Nguyen Tien Quyet - Director of Viet Duc Hospital - announced that from the first quarter of 2013, Viet Duc Hospital will conduct a trial treatment of adipose stem cells on 48 patients with spinal cord injury who have undergone surgery, within 2 years. Patients who need to treat spinal cord injury with adipose stem cells can contact the Spinal Surgery Department - Viet Duc Hospital (phone: 0439380053).

Adipose stem cell treatment process: Take 200ml of abdominal adipose tissue, then condense it to 40ml. Next, multiply 8 million mononuclear cells for 3 weeks in the laboratory using modern equipment. Filter out about 5% of stem cells and infuse them into the patient. Both thin and obese patients can take adipose tissue cells for treatment.
