At 3:00 p.m. on January 8, the panel of judges in the case of former police colonel Duong Tu Trong and his accomplices for the crime of "Organizing the smuggling of others abroad" began to enter the sentencing phase.

Announcing the verdict of the trial, the presiding judge Truong Viet Toan said: Considering the criminal acts of the 6 defendants (except Duong Tu Trong) at the trial and documents, they admitted their criminal acts, affirming that they were under Trong's direction.

At the trial, Duong Chi Dung also admitted that he asked the defendants to help him escape from Vietnam. Based on the testimony in court and at the investigation agency, the prosecution of the 6 defendants for the crime of "Organizing others to flee abroad" was confirmed to be in accordance with the law.

Regarding Duong Tu Trong at the investigation agency and at the trial, he did not admit to committing the crime, but based on the testimony of the defendants at the investigation agency, it was completely consistent with the testimony of Duong Chi Dung and the defendants at the trial. Therefore, although Duong Tu Trong did not admit his guilt, the panel of judges had sufficient grounds to affirm that Duong Tu Trong was the main character in the case. The attribution under Article 275 of the Penal Code is well-founded and in accordance with the law.

The request to return the case file of the lawyers, the panel of judges masterminded and directed other defendants to organize the escape of their brother from Vietnam.

The defendants’ actions were particularly serious because, despite knowing that Duong Chi Dung was wanted, they still tried to help. The case involved discussion, organization, and sophisticated criminal methods, so according to the law, all defendants must be prosecuted under Clause 3, Article 275 of the Penal Code. The prosecution of other defendants under Clause 1 is incorrect.

In this case, Duong Tu Trong played a key role. Knowing that his brother was being prosecuted, he organized to take his brother to Cambodia. The defendant is a high-ranking police officer, and organized this incident with many sophisticated tricks, causing difficulties for the investigation agency.

Defendant Trong has not confessed to his crime. Although his family and he have many achievements, a severe sentence is still needed for defendant Trong.

As for the defendants Son, Thang, and Anh – former police officers, they showed remorse and confessed honestly. Defendant Thang surrendered, creating conditions for the investigation agency to quickly solve the case.

However, the defendant has surrendered and has many achievements in his work, so we should consider a reasonable sentence for him.

At the investigation agency and in court, Duong Chi Dung once again confirmed that he received the news of the indictment and had been away for a while. His testimony was consistent with Dung's diary and Son's testimony.

This is a special case that the authorities are considering for prosecution. In fact, Chi Dung escaped a day before the prosecution, causing difficulties for the investigation agency.

It is necessary to initiate a case of Disclosing State Secrets.

The act of receiving money to fix the case for Duong Chi Dung, the act of receiving money from businesses... if there is a basis, it will be handled according to the law.

At court, the panel of judges also read the decision to prosecute the case: Disclosing state secrets.

Accordingly, the panel sentenced defendant Duong Tu Trong to 18 years in prison. Defendant Vu Tien Son received a sentence of 13 years in prison (4-5 years less than the recommended sentence by the Procuracy)./.
