Shocking secrets not yet revealed from beauty contests

Being single, never married, or having children are all mandatory requirements in any official beauty pageant. However, there are still a few cases where the organizers are shocked to see contestants who are married or even have children but still brazenly participate in beauty pageants.

Spectacular tricks

If at the Miss Vietnam 2012 contest, the bright candidate for the crown that year and also the gold prize of Vietnam Supermodel 2011 - Vuong Thu Phuong was eliminated right before the final award night because of information and pictures of her getting married in 2010. Or like the story of the former Miss World Vietnam 2010 - Luu Thi Diem Huong who got married to a tycoon in 2011 but still "evaded the law" to participate in Miss Universe 2012 in the US.

Although this is not the first time that contestants in Vietnam have been suspected and accused, this is a real shock to many people. However, this incident is not as serious as some similar events in the most prestigious competitions such as Miss World or Miss Universe.

Hoa hậu Thế Giới 2005 - Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir cùng bố mẹ.
Miss World 2005 - Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir with her parents.

The most spectacular deception was probably the case of Miss World 2005 - Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir. During the entire competition, no one paid attention to the background of the contestants, the audience only cared about which girl was bright and had the potential to win the crown. However, when the organizers carefully reviewed her background, they found out that her mother - Unnur Steinsson was once the representative of Iceland to participate in the Miss World contest in 1983 and won 4th runner-up.

The 33rd Miss World final was held on November 17, 1983 in the UK, but the new beauty queen's birth certificate stated May 25, 1984. So a truth that had been hidden for 22 years was revealed. Her mother "survived the disaster" and achieved great success in the contest that year with a belly of about 3-4 months pregnant, and now, her daughter has become the third beauty from Iceland to win this noble beauty title.

There are also a few mother-daughter pairs who have become national beauty queens and represented their country in international beauty pageants, such as former Miss Universe 2003 - Amelia Vega, whose mother was a contestant from the Dominican Republic at Miss World 1980 - Patricia Polanco Álvarez. Or at the Miss Universe 2008 pageant held in Vietnam, the Bahamas beauty - Sacha Scott, whose mother also represented this Caribbean island nation at the same pageant in 1983.

And most recently, at the Miss Universe 2014 pageant, there was Finnish contestant - Bea Toivonen and her mother, Miss Universe 1985 - Marja Kinnunen. Both participated in this pageant in the same city of Miami, USA and did not win any achievements.

Hoa hậu Mỹ 1957 - Mary Leona Gage là trường hợp nổi tiếng đầu tiên bị truất ngôi vì kết hôn và có con trước khi đi thi.
Miss America 1957 - Mary Leona Gage was the first famous case to be dethroned for getting married and having children before competing.

However, not everyone is as lucky as the mother and daughter of Miss Iceland or as happy as some of the cases mentioned above. There have been many beauty queens who, despite being married and even having children, still deliberately participated in beauty pageants to make their dreams come true. But their dreams have not come true or have come true but they have had to sadly return their titles and be sent back home in tears and shame.

At Miss Universe 1999, Miss Guam was eliminated when she was discovered to be pregnant despite attending some activities within the framework of the contest. This unprecedented incident inspired the organizers to ask the Top 3 the following question: "If Miss Universe becomes pregnant during her term, will she be accepted to continue holding that title?"

And 10 years later at Miss Universe 2009, the "peppercorn" beauty queen, only 1m50 tall, representing the Turks & Caicos Islands - Jewel Selver, had to give the reason that she was not healthy enough to participate and asked to return home exactly 1 day before the final night (August 23, 2009). However, according to rumors, people saw her unusual belly, suspected of being pregnant, and often suffered from morning sickness, so the organizers tried to let her leave the contest with honor. In January 2010 (5 months after the contest), she gave birth to her first child.

Stripped of crown for fraud

The first beauty queen to be stripped of her crown for lying about her marital status was Mary Leona Gage. She was crowned Miss America for the sixth time on July 17, 1957, but was stripped of her crown just one day later when her lie was exposed. Mary was not only married but also the mother of two children. She had even been through two marriages, the first one at the age of 14.

She received the news shortly after learning that her name was in the Top 15 semi-finals of the 1957 Miss Universe pageant, which was held on July 19, too late for the United States to have another representative as they were the host country that year. Miss Argentina, who placed 16th in the qualifying round, was replaced in the Top 15 semi-finals that year. Mary Leona Gage passed away on October 5, 2010, at the age of 71.

But the most famous and scandalous was the scandal of the beauty Helen Morgan from Wales. She represented Wales at Miss Universe 1974, held in the Philippines and won the title of first runner-up. Helen then went on to represent the host country, the United Kingdom, at Miss World 1974 and won the crown that year. But just 4 days after being crowned, she was forced to give up the crown to the runner-up from South Africa because it was discovered that she had an 18-month-old baby before competing.

1974 was also the year that Miss Universe - Amparo Muñoz also failed to fulfill her responsibilities but was not dethroned. Helen was supposed to replace her but was not able to because she was crowned Miss World. If this unfortunate incident had not happened, Helen Morgan would have been honored as one of the few beauties with the most impressive total achievements in the history of the most prestigious beauty pageants on the planet.
