Giant pumpkin worth 5 million VND, customers compete to buy

Giant pumpkins, although still young and not yet ready for harvest, already weigh about 20 kg and are being ordered by customers at a price of 5 million VND each.

Mr. Thanh Tung, a garden owner in Da Lat (Lam Dong) said that giant pumpkins are an American variety that has been introduced to Vietnam for several years now, with three types: red pumpkin, green pumpkin, and white pumpkin. Da Lat gardeners often buy the seeds to grow for tourists who come to visit and take photos. In addition, gardeners grow this variety for food (tops and fruits).

This type of pumpkin can weigh up to a ton when harvested. However, this is the Halloween season so gardeners are picking young pumpkins to sell because the demand for decoration is very high.

Giant pumpkins are being grown by some gardeners in Da Lat.

"Although the squash is still young, each fruit only weighs about 20 kg because it has only been planted for 3 months, customers still accept to buy it for 5 million VND/fruit," said Mr. Thanh Tung.

According to Mr. Tung, currently in Da Lat there are only a few gardens growing this type of tree, and the quantity grown in each garden is not much, so customers including local residents, tourist areas, and restaurants are frantically trying to buy them in time to decorate for Halloween.

"There are still many people calling to order giant pumpkins, but I have to refuse because I have no more pumpkins to sell," said Thanh Tung.

Sharing about the giant pumpkin variety above, Mr. Le Huu Phan, a gardener in Da Lat, said that he has been growing this pumpkin variety for about 3 years. The first crop he tried, the largest fruit weighed more than 100 kg, the average fruit weighed 40-80 kg/fruit.

Due to the high demand for pumpkins during Halloween, gardeners pick young pumpkins to sell for 5 million VND/fruit.

However, according to Mr. Phan, to plant it requires a very elaborate care process. For example, before planting, it is necessary to prepare organic fertilizer, composted manure into the ground before planting the tree. The planting hole must be about 4-5 square meters wide because the squash grows very quickly, and needs enough nutrients to nourish the tree. During the planting process, water and fertilize according to the needs of the tree, too much water will damage the fruit.

When the tree is 1.5 months old, the leaves are as big as an umbrella and it starts to flower. However, you have to wait until the tree is 2 months old, the length of the trunk is about 4-5 m to proceed with pollination. At this time, the tree is really mature and capable of growing fruit. In particular, each tree should only have 1-2 fruits so that the tree can provide enough nutrients to grow the fruit.

Mr. Phan said, from planting to harvesting is 6 months, the squash is very fragrant and delicious. In particular, the squash tops are extremely large, you can cut off the squash tops and stir-fry them to cook like normal squash./.
