The tragic life of 'mass sex slaves' in refugee camps
Rohingya women in refugee camps along the Thai-Malaysian border have been forced into mass sex slavery by traffickers and camp guards.
Nur Khaidha Abdul Shukur, 24, who was held in the camp for eight days with her young child, said that every night two to three young, beautiful Rohingya women were taken away by the camp guards. "They were gang-raped. Later, the women became pregnant," Nur Khaidha told Malaysia's Bernama newspaper.

She said most Rohingya women were often taken away by camp guards for several days to serve their sexual needs.
"I didn't ask them when they returned to the camp but I'm sure I know what happened to them," she said. Nur Khaidha said the women who were taken away often did not speak after returning, were not allowed to speak and were threatened with beatings if they told anyone.
The two women Nur Khaidha spoke of who were pregnant were taken to another camp for more than six months, she said, to prepare for childbirth. There are 15 Rohingya women in the camp she is in who are pregnant in this way. Five of them have given birth and have been taken to another camp.
In the Rohingya refugee camp, any woman is at risk of being gang-raped, even women with small children are not spared. "Every night I pray that I will not be a victim of them," she shared.
Nur Khaidha from Maungdaw, Myanmar, migrated with her husband and their young child. They crossed the Andaman Sea on a boat to Malaysia. Months ago, the couple were separated at the border between Thailand and Malaysia and were placed in two different camps, waiting to enter Malaysia.

The husband of Nurul Amin Nobi Hussein, 25, interviewed by Bernama also confirmed the same information as his wife. He said he witnessed cases of Rohingya women being forced into sex slavery by traffickers right in refugee camps on the Malaysian side.
"We heard the women screaming and calling for help when they were raped. The screams were very close to our camp but it was dark and we couldn't see what was happening," the husband said, according to AFP.
AFP said it has not been possible to verify the story of Nur Khaidha and his wife with relevant authorities.
US Assistant Secretary of State Anne Richard, who has been touring refugee camps to learn more, told reporters on June 1 that she has met with many female refugees in Malaysia.
"I understand, they're going through a terrible time. They look like nothing," she said.
The story of the Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants has recently attracted the attention of the international community when both Thailand and Malaysia identified many illegal refugee camps established on their territory. Along with that, there are graves of people who died near the camps and are believed to be the bodies of refugees.
Rohingya and Bangladeshis migrate by sea towards Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia and set up camps in border areas. A group of suspected human traffickers organize the dangerous boat trips for Rohingya and Bangladeshis.
Both Thailand and Malaysia say they have arrested dozens of local officials and police involved in these human trafficking cases.
