This year’s Asia Security Summit focuses on the following topics: military modernization programs, global power balance, regional security architecture, countering transnational threats, and coping with natural disasters. According to Tim Huxley, Executive Director of IISS Asia, maritime disputes in the East Sea are a major topic at this year’s conference. Some countries involved in the East Sea disputes may take advantage of the Shangri-La Dialogue to express their views.

According to the schedule, on the afternoon of June 2, delegates attending the Shangri-La Dialogue will have a special plenary session, in which the first topic to be discussed is "Restraining disputes in the East Sea". This shows that the East Sea continues to be a topic attracting attention in the region and the world.

Additionally, in mid-May, China continued to unilaterally impose a fishing ban in the East Sea. VietnamMaleand alsoPhilippinesAll of them protested this order. Manila even considered issuing its own fishing ban. Not only that, China also arrested two fishing boats and 14 Vietnamese fishermen who were fishing in the area of Vietnam's Hoang Sa archipelago. These fishermen and a fishing boat were later released, but China kept a fishing boat and all of the fishing gear and seafood of the Vietnamese fishermen.Male.

In response to China’s actions, the Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: “China’s obstruction and arrest of Vietnamese fishermen and fishing vessels engaged in legal and normal fishing activities in the waters of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa archipelago is a serious violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction.” Mr. Nghi added that Vietnam resolutely protests and demands that China promptly return the fishing vessels of Vietnamese fishermen and all assets that China has seized and stop similar actions.

And right before the Shangri-La Dialogue, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also said that China's claims of sovereignty in the East Sea exceeded the permission of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).
