Singaporeans, young and old, civil servants and many pregnant women lined up for 2 km, waiting to see him for the last time. They were quiet and considerate to each other as they lined up to pay their respects to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the man who transformed Singapore from a colony into an independent and prosperous nation. Some people waited in line for up to 10 hours to pay their respects to him.

Mr. Pek Tee Ann, 51 years old, told AFP that he had taken two days off from work and was standing in line with a bouquet of orchids in his hand. “Without Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, we would not have come this far,” he said sadly.

The Straits Times quoted Minister for National Development Khaw Bhoon Wan, Chairman of the People's Action Party (PAP), as saying that the sentiments of Singaporeans were beyond our imagination. "We are truly heartbroken that we are not able to meet all their wishes. We are trying our best."
